Blocked Drain: What to Try Before You Call a Plumber
Safe checks for a slow basin, shower or outdoor gully, and the signs that mean you should stop and book a plumber.
A single slow basin is often a local blockage. Two bathrooms and a gully failing together usually means the branch line or the connection toward the street. The checks below are the ones that are reasonable to try. The rest is a plumber’s job.
What you can safely check
- Lift the plug and clear hair or food from the visible waste. Do this before any chemical.
- If only one basin is slow, try a plunger with enough water to cover the cup. Block the overflow with a wet cloth.
- Look at the outdoor gully. If it is dry while the house is blocked, the problem is inside. If it is full, the problem is further down the line.
- Stop using that bathroom until you know where the water is going. A “small” overflow becomes a ceiling leak for the room below.
When to stop and call a plumber
- More than one fixture is slow or smells.
- The toilet water rises when the basin empties.
- You have already used a chemical product. Further home remedies can react with it.
- The gully is overflowing onto paving or toward an electrical box.
- The property is on a slab and you are tempted to open a pipe yourself.
A straightforward unblock is often quoted between R800 and R2 500 in Gauteng before any digging or jetting. Say if chemicals were used, and send a photo of the gully. That is the brief a plumber needs on plumbing services. Pretoria and Johannesburg requests can also start on the Pretoria or Johannesburg quote pages.
What the visit usually involves
For a basin, the plumber may pull the trap. For a gully or a main line, they may rod or jet it. Ask them to tell you if the blockage is on your side of the boundary or further out, because the municipality, the body corporate or the neighbour may be the next conversation. Do not agree to digging until you have been told why rodding will not work.
Questions homeowners ask
Can I use a chemical unblocker on a kitchen drain?
A single shop-bought dose is a common first try on a basin. Do not repeat it, do not mix products, and do not use it if you already have a plunger or rods in the line. Tell the plumber exactly what went down the drain.
When is a blocked drain an urgent plumber job?
Call when more than one fixture is blocked, sewage is coming back, the outdoor gully is overflowing toward the house, or you can hear the main line and nothing is moving. Those are not basin traps.
